About Carmen

Carmen (aka 'Doo Wop on air'): Born in Germany and living in Adelaide since 1994.

  •  Why Doo Wop as I wasn't born when most doo wop songs were produced?
I did not like music which was played on the radio when I was a teenager, so I searched stations on the AM radio frequence. I discovered Radio Luxenburg and they played the good old stuff from the 50s and later David Simmons on BFBS with his show 'Rockola'. I chose to grow up with doo wop and other 50s music. Makes me think, are we BORN with a particular music preference?

  • Previous DJ/radio experience?
Yes, I was an 'Oldies Night' DJ for a few years in Germany. Had a great time. And in 1990 I had a radio show "Carmen's Oldies Session" on a local community radio station in my home town with my brother and another friend. After 10 shows the radio station closed down. I had the best time doing the show!!! And I have the best time now running The Doo Wop Corner!

  • Is doo wop the only music I like?
    No, but it's my favorite music style. I also love Ska (50s, 60s, 80s), Rockabilly (50s), R&B (30s-50s)and also 'dark/black' music (new wave/goth-80s). Lately I also got into Swing (20-50s) & jazzy tunes (20s-50s).

  • What made me go back 'on air' in 2008?
I never thought I could run a music radio show like 'The Doo Wop Corner' just by myself. Almost chucked it when I learned to handle the mixing board.
In December 2007 I won a prize to come in the studio and play my doo wop music on Geoff Groth's 'Remember then' radio show. I was hooked and went through the training at Three D Radio. It took 12 months until I finally went on air with my first 'Doo Wop Corner' show (21 Nov 2008).
My friend Desi from the US has a lot to do with me deciding to do the show. She supported me so much and I probably woudn't be on air without her encouragement. Thank you Desi!!!

  • What were the main influences on the music style/show?
Stereotone running the 'Sunday BBQ' on Three D Radio took me somewhere else when listing to his show. This was before I even started my show. It was through him that I discovered and started loving R'n'B and Jazz. It was Jade from Three D Radio and Christine & Geoff Groth from Coast FM who kept on playing the 'old style music'. Still love their shows.

  • Why am I doing the show?
To me the main mission is to keep doo wop/50s music alive. So many beautiful songs and artists went unoticed in the 50s. It's bittersweet music, happy, cute, charming, sweet and somtimes sad. It makes you feel alive. Love it, love it, love it!!! And love to be creative in playing with the music, concepts and topics.

  • Why I can't run a normal show?
To me just lining up unrelated songs and announcing the title just isn't good enough. I need a challenge and love to play with music in a creative way e.g. using virtual voices as co-presenters, using sounds and topics to appeal to all the senses to take you (and me) somewhere else.

There is so much we can do on radio and it's just not being done.
Watch this space!

  •                                   30th Birthday Party of Three D Radio - 21 December 2009

So far my radio experience has been like this:

"Every show to come is exiting. It's like paiting on an blank canvas. It could turn out to be anything: Something which ends in the bin or a beautiful painting you'd like to put on your wall and keep forever."

Carmen Kaye

NB:Being the DJ for Amy's Ride was fantastic with 3000 people coming through!
